Foundational Writing Skills for Audit and Investigative Reporting.

Summary: Communication is paramount for government offices. Whether you are telling your story through an audit report or summarizing your findings in an investigative report, your written communications are critical. This intermediate writing training will cover three topics:

  • Mastering Tone – Defines tone in the context of audit and investigative report writing; explores common pitfalls in writing to achieve a balanced tone.
  • Deductive v. Inductive Writing – Makes a case for using the deductive style of writing (leading with the main point and following with supporting details).
  • Sentence Structures that Confuse v. Enlighten – Improves writing at the sentence level using five techniques:
  • Achieving balance between choppy and complex sentence/paragraph structure;
  • Limiting each sentence to 1-2 ideas;
  • Using a variety of sentence patterns;
  • Optimizing subject-verb-object placement; and
  • Ensuring cohesion between sentences.


Instructional Delivery Method: Group Internet Based


CPE Credits: Attendees may be eligible to receive up to 4 CPE credits in Communications and Marketing.

The training will be held on WebEx from 8:30 AM-12:45 PM (Central Time)/9:30 AM -1:45 PM (Eastern Time)/6:30 AM-10:45 AM (Pacific Time).
