The Association of Inspectors General - New York and New Jersey Chapter is hosting a breakfast meeting and training session on October 23, 2024, from 8:30 am to 11:30 am EDT at John Jay College. All NY-NJ Chapter Members are invited to join in with breakfast, a short business meeting, and a free professional development training session. A complimentary breakfast will be served before and during the Chapter Board meeting from 8:30 am until 9:30 am, in which all Chapter Members are invited.


Following the Board Meeting, the Chapter is hosting a free training for all Chapter Members:Investigations and Technology – Protecting Individuals' Rights – presented by John Curry, Senior Managing Director, Guidepost Solutions LLC and Chapter Board Member.


The training has the learning objectives of equipping participants with skills to conduct thorough, ethical investigations using modern technology, while safeguarding individuals' rights.


A Summary of the Core Learning Objectives:


1. Principles of Ethical Investigations

  • Understand the fundamentals of conducting investigations in compliance with legal standards.
  • Learn the different types of investigations (criminal, civil, administrative).
  • Ensure objectivity, accuracy, and fairness throughout the investigative process.

2. Technology in Investigations

  • Learn how to use emerging tools and technologies (e.g., databases, surveillance, and forensics software) to support investigations.
  • Learn proper data collection, storage, and analysis techniques to avoid tampering or violations of privacy.

3. Legal and Ethical Framework for Technology Use

  • Understand the laws governing the use of technology in investigations, such as privacy laws, data protection regulations, and electronic communications regulations.
  • Learn the ethical boundaries of using technology to avoid infringing on individual rights (surveillance, data tracking, etc.).
  • Develop strategies to balance investigative needs with the protection of civil liberties.

4. Protecting the Rights of Individuals

  • Understand key individual rights such as privacy, due process, and protection from unlawful searches or seizures.

5. Effective Communication and Reporting

  • Learn how to document investigations comprehensively and accurately to withstand legal scrutiny.
  • Understand the importance of transparency and accountability in the investigation process.

6. Case Studies and Real-World Application

  • Review case studies where technology played a crucial role in investigations while highlighting challenges in protecting rights.
